SMAD 332 Long-form Magazine Layout

Spring 2022

The project objectives were to learn to design spreads with a layout grid, understand the importance of paragraph and character styles in InDesign, and work with captions, sidebars, and other text features. I applied what I've learned thus far about typography, visual hierarchy, and effective compositions. As an ocean lover, I also learned more about how the moon influences life in the ocean with its light.

Inspiration

I started the project by completing research, collecting inspiration, and browsing typefaces.

I then sketched my ideas using pencil and paper.

Design and Media Rationale

I wanted my design to reflect life in the ocean. I used a color scheme of purple, blue, and yellow to symbolize the sky, ocean, and moon. I incorporated waves and motion into the layout and used a nautical font to mimic the sea.

I chose photos of animals and organisms mentioned in the article and included my illustrations as well. Overall, I aimed to establish a visual hierarchy with oceanic elements to support the article's main ideas. The original article was written by Ferris Jabr and published by ProPublica.
